在 Philip A. Fisher 的 Common Stocks and Uncommon Profits 这本书中，有一个出现最多的关键词 scuttlebutt。这个词后来 Warren Buffett 也多次提到过，他说在作出重仓 Apple Inc. 的决定的过程中他就利用了 Fisher 的 scuttlebutt 的方法，也叫大家深入理解。

Wikipedia 对 Scuttlebutt 专门有一个词条，还配有一张海军用的 scuttlebutt。

Merriam-Webster Dictionary 是这样解释 scuttle 的：to cut a hole through the bottom, deck, or side of (a ship) - 在（船的）底部、甲板或者侧边凿一个洞。

Merriam-Webster Dictionary 是这样解释 butt 的：a large cask especially for wine, beer, or water - 大桶，尤其是用于储存葡萄酒、啤酒或水的桶。

在航海术语中，scuttlebutt 最早用于指代用于提供饮水的桶。由于水手们在饮水处聚集时交流八卦，因此 scuttlebutt  成为航海俚语，用来表示八卦或谣言。对应在办公室里就是饮水机，不时成为员工聚集和吹水的地方，所以英语里有 water cooler conversation、water cooler chat、water cooler talk、water cooler gossip 等说法。

In investing, Scuttlebutt means discussing and understanding a company's business by personally talking to stakeholders.

当然不能根据八卦或者谣言来指导投资，Fisher 用 scuttlebutt 这个词，意思是通过亲自与投资标的公司的利益相关者（公司本身、公司竞争者、供应商、客户等等）交流和了解该公司的业务，简而言之是通过真实的“普通街头”消息源了解一家公司是强势还是弱势的方法。

“普通街头”在原文中是“Main Street”，对立于“Wall Street”。Fisher 说各种来自“Wall Street”的小子大部分都是噪音。

互联网上有很多人对这本书中的 scuttlebutt 进行了解读。我认为一上来就理解这个词的意思对我们阅读整本书有十分重要的帮助。
